On 16th June I was booked by The Guru Fitness Academy to photograph a session of Krav Maga.
The instructor and founder of The Academy, David Amroon began with a warm-up consisting of a 45-minute segment from the Insanity Workout. For those of you familiar with this workout, you'll know it's a sure fire way to get the blood pumping!
The remainder of the session was devoted to Krav Maga. I'd never heard of it prior to being booked so I had to do a bit of research before the shoot.
Krav Maga is a system of martial arts developed in Israel derived from street fighting skills, but has been refined for civilian and military purposes. It's not about beating people up, it's more about taking care of your own personal safety by neutralising a threat and escaping from danger. In UK fitness centres it's currently being marketed as a form of self-defence.
David showed the group how to defend themselves against a punch, being strangled, an attack with a blunt weapon or a knife. Although there was a serious message in the training, the mood was very upbeat and positive. Some members of the group had life-affirming messages on the backs of their T-shirts. These are a few examples:
"Amy loves to be loved and has so much love to give. I most definitely value my life. Thank you Krav Maga"
"David loves true beauty, peace and happiness. I most definitely value my life. Thank you Krav Maga"
"Gavriel loves the prospect of eternal romance. I most definitely value my life. Thank you Krav Maga"
The Guru Fitness Academy is based at Fitness First, Ilford and specialises in personal fitness training and martial arts.
