On Saturday 11th May 2013, I photographed Mike and Paul's civil partnership ceremony at Hackney Town Hall. In fact it was more than just a civil partnership ceremony, because they decided to combine Mike's 50th birthday and Paul's 40th to make it a 3 in 1 celebration. Mike and Paul had also been together for 19 years so there was plenty to celebrate!
It was my first time photographing an event at Hackney Town Hall. The theme was black and gold and, coincidently the ceremony was held in the Gold Suite, in the presence of close family and friends.
Appropriately, Mike and Paul arrived to the sound of "Black and Gold" by Sam Sparro and were led up the aisle by their mothers. The reception took place in Hackney Town Hall's Assembly Room, which had been beautifully prepared by Easy Gourmet Catering.
Paul's after-diner speech had their guests in stitches and then Mike surprised them with a rousing rendition of Liza Minnelli's "Cabaret" - and they absolutely loved it!
After a fabulous dessert, Mike and Paul opened the dance floor with their first dance to "How Deep Is Your Love" by the Bee Gees. I left just as the dance floor was starting to fill up, courtesy of LX Tricks Lighting and Sound.
Hackney Town Hall is a wonderful venue to photograph so I hope this was not my first and last visit there!
