I first met Sophia in August 2011 when I was booked to photograph two of her Zumba classes in Plaistow, East London. My first observation was that she is very expressive. She isn't one of those fitness instructors who just goes through the motions, she believes in what she does and this inspires and motivates the people who do her classes. Details of Sophia's classes can be found on her Facebook page.
In the past I have photographed Sophia purely in her role as a fitness instructor, as shown the first two photographs below, but our photoshoot on 16 February 2013 was more about the person behind the fitness instructor. We started planning this photoshoot several months before, and while I searched the internet for inspiration, and tested various lighting set ups, Sophia concentrated on perfecting her styling.
We produced the latest set of pictures at The Bow Bunker which is a new and innovative studio space in Hackney, East London and owned by commercial photographer Perou. Like all great plans it changed along the way, but the things that remained constant throughout were the willingness to experiment and the intention to produce something very different.
Both Sophia and I have been on a journey of personal and professional development, and that journey continues ...
